![]() Chanting in " T.N.T." was also George Young's idea, added after he heard Angus ad-libbing the "oi" chant to himself, and suggested he record it. For the next three years, whenever they played the song live, Angus would play an extended guitar solo. Regardless, Scott – who knew how to play the recorder – learned the instrument and went on to play them on stage with the band up until 1976, when he set the bagpipes down on the corner of the stage and they were destroyed by fans. Singer Bon Scott had played in a pipe band in his teens, so George suggested he play bagpipes on the song, not realizing that Scott had been a drummer, not a piper. " It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" was edited down from an extended jam by producer George Young and the inclusion of the bagpipes was his idea to add an extra dynamic to the track. ![]() Once the backing track was done, he would literally be locked in the kitchen there at Alberts, and come out with a finished song. Bon would be in and out when the band was recording backing tracks. Malcolm and Angus would have the barest bones of a song, the riff and different bits, and George would hammer it into a tune. Malcolm and George would sit down at the piano and work it out. Malcolm and Angus would come up with riffs and all that, and then we'd go into the studio. In Clifton Walker's 1994 book Highway to Hell: The Life and Times of AC/DC Legend Bon Scott, bassist Mark Evans speaks about the band's creative process during this period: So I suppose you could say that T.N.T was the one that really pulled the identity like, this is AC/DC, there's no doubt about it, that's who it's going to be and that's how it's going to stay." In Murray Engleheart's book AC/DC: Maximum Rock & Roll, producer Harry Vanda states, "I suppose there might have been one or two tracks on the first album, a few things that they were experimenting with, which probably later on they wouldn't have done anymore. ![]() ![]() They also simplified their personnel system and would use it from then on out, which was Angus strictly playing lead guitar, Malcolm Young playing rhythm guitar, and the drummer and bassist being the only ones to play drums and bass guitar respectively on the albums. saw the band fully embrace the formula for which they would become famous: hard-edged, rhythm and blues-based rock and roll. marked a change in direction from AC/DC's debut album, High Voltage, which was released on 17 February 1975 whereas High Voltage featured some experimentation with the styles of its songs and had a variety of personnel filling multiple roles, T.N.T. ![]() ![]() With these resources taken care of, businesses can take this infrastructure and build on it, installing operating systems, creating databases, and storing files. IaaS providers can deliver and manage services like firewalls, network connections, load balancers, data storage, and identity management. Through IaaS, businesses can access the amount of computing, storage, and networking power they need over the internet from a third-party provider, giving them the freedom to access an IT environment that suits their needs, and can be scaled up or down as required without forking out for additional servers or hardware. This service enables companies to get rid of the hassle of having to operate infrastructure and hardware of their own. IaaS gives businesses the option to have a vendor provide and manage these things on their end. Traditionally, these aspects of computing would be the responsibility of an organization’s own IT department, housed and managed under its own roof. Infrastructure is the digital scaffolding that supports a computer system the really important back-end things like servers and storage, networks, security, and data centers. SaaS software isn’t run from your machine, so as long as you can connect to the internet, you don’t need to buy or maintain hardware, which saves you time and money.īefore we go into what Infrastructure as a Service is, it’s worth taking a second to define exactly what we mean by infrastructure when it comes to computing. If your computer isn’t powerful or new enough to run certain software, you don’t have to miss out. Plus, because they’re powered by the cloud, SaaS products are more powerful and capable of much more than a traditional version (which can only do as much as your computer can process). Generally speaking, software vendors are focusing more on cloud versions of their products, so embracing SaaS means you get access to the best and newest features. Always up to dateĪs it’s based on the vendor’s own servers, you’ll always be presented with the latest version of your “as a service” product, without you having to manually download and install updates. With a SaaS version, you just log in to a website from any device-whether that’s your laptop, your phone, your tablet, a public computer, your work computer, your mom’s computer… you get the idea-and you can use the software. ![]() If you have a piece of software installed on your home computer, that’s the only place you can use it. Not only does this make the software more accessible, but it also means that if you decide you don’t need it anymore, you can simply cancel the subscription without being lumbered with an expensive tool that you don’t use. Instead, you can pay a smaller price on a monthly or yearly basis. You don’t have to have a big chunk of cash upfront to buy the software. The benefits of “as a service” models are enormous. Instead of paying for the software outright, customers pay a subscription fee to access it Word then becomes less of a product people purchase, and more of a service they pay to use. Now, Word is available “as a service.” Rather than having to download Word and use it on a single device, customers can use a SaaS version that’s hosted on Microsoft’s internal servers. That software would be run on, and therefore only accessible from, the computer that it was installed on. If you wanted to update Word to get new features, you’d have to download the update and install it on your computer. A one-time purchase, after handing over your cash you’d be able to use Word forever (this kind of software purchase is known as a perpetual license). This purchase probably entailed buying a disc containing the software, installing it on your computer. These services are accessed through the internet.įor example, a few years ago if you wanted to be able to create and edit documents, you might have purchased Microsoft Word. “As a service” simply means a facility, usually related to IT, computing, or telecommunications, that’s available to its users as a service, rather than something they install and operate themselves through their own hardware. I took me while to figure out what it was – I’d opened the App Store on his Mac right before I left to see if his machine was eligible to upgrade to Mavericks and I forgot to close it. For example, last weekend after we left from visiting he sent me a very concerned email that he had a very large popup that was from Apple and was demanding that he upgrade to Mavericks. Ken is quite clever and is a fabulous resource on investment advice, but he is completely stymied when things don’t act predictably on the computer. I know, all I have to do is click on the LastPass icon in the browser toolbar, search for the site and select password, but it’s an extra step beyond the magic it can sometimes do. Some sites use a popup that evidently is completely invisible to LastPass and it doesn’t enter anything at all. It worked flawlessly with LastPass as my browser plugin!īut then I went to my credit union and they expect the user name on one page and after you click go only then do you get to enter your password, so LastPass gets confused (oddly it doesn’t enter the user name but does enter the password). ![]() That meant grabbing a computer, going to /authorize, selecting Verizon FiOS as my ISP and then entering my username and password. I think I’m getting close to talking them into this but then I got to thinking – how well will they adapt to the less than perfect experience you get with these password managers? Today we switched AppleTVs around in our house so when we went to HBO Go to play Game of Thrones it asked for an authorization code. Having all that information in one place is a concern and so far I’m just barely getting a crack into them that their own ability to create and safely secure a good set of random passwords is much worse than the possibility of something like LastPass or 1Password even being able to be cracked. However, Steve’s parents are so security conscious that they don’t yet trust the idea of a password manager. He was delighted that there was an easy solution to making it secure. With Password Haystacks I was able to show him how padding his password with some meaningless special characters (even repeating characters) took it in to the hundreds of centuries to crack if he doubled it in length. Even substituting a number for one of the letters didn’t take more than moments to crack in an offline scenario with a good compute server. I like this tool because it helped me illustrate how a password generated by the first letter of every word of a phrase isn’t all that hard to crack since it was only 8 characters long. I’ve showed him Steve Gibson’s Password Haystack where you can learn what the effect of adding more characters and more types of characters can do to affect how long it takes it to get cracked. ![]() Ken and I have spent a great deal of time discussing what makes a good password, and he trusts my advice on how to strengthen his own. Steve’s parents are VERY security conscious and like all of us struggle with multiple passwords. ![]() Interested in picking up a Garmin watch? I’m looking forward to it and hope people dig it.” “So I’m stoked that I’m coming to Vail, one of the most beautiful parts of the country. “It seems these days it’s pretty rare that I get to the U.S., and whenever we get there, we only have a few weeks to do a few places - and it’s a big country,” he said. With decades of experience in the music industry, Hayes says live music is the “ life blood” for bands like Gov’t Mule. “We’ve always loved to play in Colorado,” Hayes said. Hayes and Gov’t Mule have performed in Vail before, with some of the four-piece band’s earliest shows in Colorado. We kind of do our part to keep that stuff alive, but it’s not like that music needs our help.” But Gov’t Mule these days incorporates a couple of those tunes into our shows. I’m sure we all miss the music in a way that has obviously left a void in live music. “It’s been a tough few years with losing Butch and Gregg back to back. “That was such a huge part of my life for 25 years,” he said. We would have never thought that 25 years later Gov’t Mule would still be touring.”Ĭelebrating 25 years, Gov’t Mule is set to release a double DVD from a live set at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, in addition to touring across the world.įor Hayes, who performed with the Allman Brothers from 14, Gov’t Mule does its part in keeping the music from the iconic rock band alive. “It sort of caught fire and became its own thing,” Hayes said, “and we were forced to make the decision to continue or not - and the decision was obvious. ![]() They wanted to do something for fun then return to their “day jobs,” Hayes said.
